Road Transport

Intelligent transport systems for road transport is the second most important segment of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) market accounting for nearly half of its revenues. The GNSS consumer market in the road sector has really exploded in the last 5 years with more than 60% per year of growth and prices declining. It is still growing rapidly with vehicles to be equipped with a navigation device passing from one third of the market now to nearly 90% in 2020.

GNSS applications in road transport cover much more than in-car navigation: for instance, road user charging with GNSS-based toll collection systems allows a more efficient use of the road infrastructure, reducing both traffic and environmental effects. Fleet management and logistics can also benefit from the accuracy brought by EGNOS today and tomorrow by Galileo, by locating in real-time, trucks, buses, taxis, etc.  This helps optimise resourcesbetter fleet management and reduces time and fuel consumption.

In addition, innovative applications have been developed. For example the eCall programme makes use of GNSS positioning to implement an automatic in-vehicle emergency call system allowing emergency services to remotely locate vehicles after an accident. Other new applications such as accident reconstruction or anti-theft systems may also emerge.
